About relational psychotherapy

We come into the world with unique gifts. When all goes well, we develop into secure, confident adults, capable of deep and fulfilling relationships with other people and eager to make a positive impact on the world. For most of us, not all goes so smoothly. Events and experiences along the way can interrupt our growth, dampen our curiosity, make us doubt ourselves, withdraw in order to feel safe, and sometimes lead to addiction and other self-harming behaviors. These effects can inhibit or prevent us from enjoying deep relationships, meaningful work and a sense of well-being.

Fortunately, nature provides us all with an innate ability to heal. One important way is through connection, in this case, the therapeutic relationship.  Writing about interpersonal neurobiology, Dan Siegel, MD says, "In short, the mind is an embodied and relational process that regulates the flow of energy and information," meaning the mind has the power to integrate the brain and promote well-being.

Our work is to access the inner resources you already have. We will attempt to stay in the present moment because mindfulness deepens relationship and self awareness. We will also visit the past to see how history may still be affecting your self-view and your relationships. And finally, we will keep an eye on the future as your sense of purpose and direction come into focus.
The past influences everything and dictates nothing.-- Adam Phillips

I know from years of experience that change happens when we allow it; when we stop beating back the waves. When we accept the things we are not proud of, recognizing them as only parts of us, we make room for the boundless potential to emerge -- difficult to do but easier together. So, we move open-mindedly with compassion and purpose, directing our attention to what is important in each moment.

Each treatment is collaborative and unique. The way through usually isn't found by thinking about problems alone, but by tapping into the awareness discovered within and between us.
